The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and social care in England. They make sure that health and social care services provide people with safe, effective, compassionate, and high-quality care, and that they are continually improving.
The CQC have 4 main functions:
1. To check that health and social care services are safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led
2. To provide new and relevant intelligence about the quality of care
3. To act as a catalyst for improvement
4. To assure the public that they are being protected
The CQC carry out these functions through a range of activities, including:
• Inspecting and rating health and social care services
• Investigating concerns and incidents
• Collecting and analyzing data
• Engaging with service users, carers, and the public
• Promoting improvement
• Regulating health and social care providers
The CQC are accountable to Parliament through the Department of Health and Social Care.
