If you own your home jointly with someone else, then it can be sold to pay for care. This is often the case when one person needs to go into a care home and the other person can no longer afford to keep up with the mortgage or upkeep of the property. If you have a joint mortgage, then both parties will need to agree to the sale of the property. If you own the property outright, then you can sell it without the other person’s consent, but they will still be entitled to half of the proceeds.
